Researchers are increasingly interested in how this kind of persistent, low-grade inflammation interacts with the systems involved in processing and storing energy.
So, can inflammation affect metabolism?
Yes, there is a connection. But it is not as simple as inflammation making your metabolism "slow".
First, What Does Inflammation Actually Mean?
Think about the last time you cut your finger or twisted an ankle. The redness, warmth and swelling that followed were all signs of an inflammatory response.
In situations like these, inflammation is useful. Your immune system is responding to damage and helping to coordinate the processes needed for recovery.
It can also happen when your body encounters an infection.

The temporary rise associated with exercise is not equivalent to persistently elevated inflammatory signalling.

Build meals around a varied diet

Can Reducing Inflammation Speed Up Your Metabolism?
This is where we need to be careful with the wording.
You may see products, diets or online programmes claiming to "switch off inflammation" and dramatically boost metabolic rate.
That oversimplifies the science.
